Best Baby Carriers

Ask any new mom and she will agree that owning a baby carrier is a must! Babies need to be close to you and are at their happiest and most content when cuddled in your arms…but you also have a life, right(?) with lots of daily responsibilities.

Pack your little one in a baby carrier and he/she will sleep for hours hearing your breathing, the beat of your heart, feeling the soothing motion and warmth of your body…he’ll think he’s still in his bed-womb. Get it?

You’ll be hands-free to do your own thing whether it’s taking a walk with the dog, doing chores around the house, gardening, reading, working on the computer, watching TV, preparing dinner or going on a hike. Did I forget anything? Oh yea…baby carriers are great for navigating through airports and make flying with your infant a breeze.

You owe it to yourself to relax! Turn on some classical music, sit back, get comfy and cuddle with your newborn.

⇒Did you know… even before the birth of your baby, music played an important role in his developing brain? Studies have proven that listening to classical music during pregnancy, especially during the 8th and 9th month, affects the development of your baby physically, emotionally and intellectually. Music strengthens cognitive thinking and sensory development.

By the age of six months, your child will be more advanced in terms of intellect, linguistic and motor skills than babies who received no musical stimulus.Music can activate the neural pathways responsible for boosting many skills like creativity. Pretty cool, huh?

Benefits of using a Baby Carrier

  • Encourages development in your infant as they listen to your voice and watch what you are doing
  • Calms and soothes a colicky baby
  • Hands-free. You can cuddle and cradle your newborn while doing normal everyday tasks.
  • When you don’t want to use a stroller
  • And when your baby is a toddler, it will come in handy when his little legs get tired on a walk or hike.

So…who makes the best baby carrier?

It’s really all personal preference and how much money you want to spend. Hopefully, you will receive a baby carrier as a shower gift – and the one you’ve had your eye on.

⇒If you’ll be using a baby carrier during hot weather, make sure the fabric breathes like a soft, airy mesh.

There are 2 styles of baby carriers.

  • Wraps and slings: A wide piece of material that wraps over your shoulder and across your body and midsection; tied to create a carrier. Not my favorite as it seems uncomfortable, cumbersome and a pain to wrap properly and tie with one hand. Plus, it does not provide any support for your newborn and all the weight is on one shoulder. Besides, who would want all that material wrapped around them in the warmer months.
  • Soft structured: These carriers have a padded carrying pack for your newborn and adjustable padded shoulder straps for you and dad.

First, let’s take a look at the Ergobaby 360 Carrier

  • Adjustable head support
  • Padded shoulder straps to evenly distribute your baby’s weight
  • Sleeping hood
  • Whole supported waistband giving exceptional lower back support – maximizes comfort especially post c-section
  • Adjustable ergonomic seat as your baby grows from infant to toddler
  • All carry positions such as baby facing towards you or facing outwards
  • Wear on your hip or your back as your little one grows
  • Newborn infant insert (sold separately)
  • Thoughtful design for breast feeding moms
  • UBF 50+ tuckaway baby hood for sun & wind protection

  • The Velcro waistband is extremely wide and cannot be changed once on without undoing the whole thing and re-fastening. And as you know, pulling Velcro apart cannot be done silently if your baby is sleeping.

⇒Instead of Velcro, you may want to purchase a carrier with a clasp closure which won’t wake up your sleeping newborn…and you know what they say…NEVER wake a sleeping baby.

  • No pocket for your cell phone, keys OR a pacifier
  • For breast feeding moms, the protective hood is not very big for adequate coverage
  • The straps under the baby’s arms are not padded and may rub against sensitive skin
  • For all these Cons it’s a bit pricey.

Now, Let’s review the BabyBjörn Original

Click on the image to check it out!

BabyBjörn has several models of baby carriers to fit your lifestyle. The original, simple model is best suited for your newborn weighing in excess of 8lbs.

  • Super easy to put on by yourself –  just practice before putting your baby in the first time.
  • Super easy to slip your baby out of if he’s sleeping by using the 2 side snaps
  • Small and light weight…it can even fit in your diaper bag
  • Easy to clean…it’s machine washable
  • Made from toxin-free materials and is soft and child friendly
  • Perfect for babies 8-25lbs

  • The BabyBjörn original does not have a waist belt so as your baby gains weight and grows, the added weight will cause pressure on your shoulders and back which can get pretty intense after a while.

So, you may just want to start off with the BabyBjörn Miracle. This baby carrier offers more support than the Original which is something to consider. It can be used right from the start, the day you leave the hospital and it just happens to be on sale for $99.74. The regular retail price is $149.98, so get yourself something nice with the money you just saved. Check out these pluses…

  • It’s anatomically designed so you don’t need an extra infant insert.
  • Waist belt giving you excellent back support and allows you to carry the baby’s weight on your hips, not your shoulders
  • Sturdy, adjustable head and neck support which is crucial for the first 5 months of your baby’s life while his neck muscles are developing.
  • Easy on & off when your newborn is sleeping
  • Front facing for your newborn and outward facing when he reaches the 5 month mark or weighs 26lbs and is 33″ long.

  • No wide leg position
  • No extra padded shoulder straps
  • Cannot carry on your back – front only

This next baby carrier just may be my favorite because it has all the pluses of the others mentioned above but offers even more. Read on…

BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One Outdoors

  • Perfect for hiking and outdoor activities
  • Made with water-repellent and moisture-wicking materials
  • Complete with a storage pocket and loops for keys, your cell phone and water bottle
  • 4 way front and back carrying
  • Sturdy waist belt to reduce back pressure
  • Padded adjustable shoulder straps
  • Multiple adjustment options
  • Perfect for newborn to 3 years with built in infant position. No infant insert needed
  • Hip healthy for your newborn

This is an important factor to consider…

BabyBjörn is acknowledged as a hip-healthy baby carrier by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. This carrier provides the correct support for your newborn baby’s hips and encourages good hip joint development.

More Pros:

  • Optimal carrying position for newborns that allows you to carry your baby high up on your chest – close to your heart, close enough to kiss and close enough to monitor his breathing.
  • As your little one grows, you can lower the position of the carrier and adjust the width of the leg openings.
  • When your child is 5 months, you can transition to the front-facing position and fold down the head support. At this age, your baby’s hips, neck and spine are sufficiently developed to be carried front-facing.

Now he gets to see the world around him!

Click on the baby carrier image to check it out for yourself. And it’s on sale for $128.18, marked down from $189.95. That’s a nice savings especially with all the things you’ll need for your little one.

In Closing…

There are a ton of infant baby carrier brands on the market today to consider so take your time and do your research. While I’ve only looked at two competitive manufacturers here, I hope I’ve helped in getting you started. As I mentioned earlier, it really boils down to personal preference. Some want a carrier with all the bells and whistles where others are satisfied with a simple sling or wrap. My best advice would be to look at your lifestyle and choose a carrier that fits what you enjoy doing…or not doing. Should a friend or relative offer you a hand-me-down carrier…still do your research and make the best decision for you and more so for your precious cargo.  A freebie is great but the developing bones in your newborn have a much greater value.

In any event… choose a carrier whose manufacturer is well known for working closely with medical specialists like orthopedists and neonatal physicians to create the best carrier for your developing newborn. In other words, do your research and read consumer written product reviews.

I welcome any comments you have with your own experiences in choosing the best baby carrier. What worked best for your newborn and what would you recommend?

This is great information! My wife and I used a combination of the Wraps and the BabyBjorn original. The wrap worked exceptionally well while my wife was recovering from her C-Section and the baby was less than the recommended 8 pounds. Once the kids reached the minimum weight though, we used the BabyBjorn exclusively because it was so much more convenient. Just something to consider about those wraps, they are actually pretty comfortable, but as you mentioned they get hard to put on as the kids get bigger.

    • Karen

Hi, Chris…thanks for visiting and leaving your valuable comments and thoughts. I can see why the wrap would be comfortable after a C-Section so I’m glad you mentioned that. I wonder though, did you use the wrap for yourself? How was that?

I am actually looking into carriers myself and found your reviews so helpful! I love the fact that the last one offers so much. I would think the other ones would limit you on what you could actually use it for, therefore forcing you to buy multiple ones. I look forward to your next baby product review!!

    • Elizabeth…thank you for visiting and sharing your comments and thoughts. I agree with you and think it’s so important to do the research and choose the right carrier that fits your lifestyle. The last thing young parents need to do is have to purchase different carriers as their child grows. That money could go to other needs of the child.

I like this info. I would think having the baby close to you would be comforting to the baby. And this helps you to have arms free too. That makes it comfortable for the parent too. This is nice. Thanks for the comparisons. And for showing the pricing. And it’s interesting that playing music during birth is so good for the developing child. I’m glad you included that here.

    • Karen

Thanks for visiting, Janine, and leaving your thoughts. Baby carriers offer a lot of comfort for the parent. It makes it easy to monitor the newborn’s breathing and the baby feels like he’s back in the womb.

Music is very important to a baby’s development and can very well have an impact on what kind of music they gravitate to as they get older. The music they hear before birth will be the music they recognize and feel comforted by after birth.

I love this article. It has been a long time since my young ones were at the age to need a baby carrier. I do know some new mothers, however, who could really benefit from an article like this. I will be giving this information to two of my co workers who are having children soon. I am positive that they will appreciate the focus and effort that you have put into this review. Thanks for this!!!

  • Danielle Ketcher

Thanks for the pro’s and con’s on the baby carriers which has helped a huge amount as I’m just about to have my second child and remember how stressful it was without one but never found the one that suited my needs. This has helped my decision.
The video made me laugh so much and hope when we go on holiday soon its not as hectic as this. Would have been nice to see a video with the use of the baby carries as an extra help but not necessary.
I’m thinking about getting the Erogbaby 360, does it come in any other colours?

    • Karen

Hi Danielle…glad you enjoyed the video. There are a number of Ergobaby 360 styles to choose from and yes…they come in lots of beautiful colors. Aside from black, there are a few prints, different shades of grey, green, moonstone, different shades of blue and even icy mint. It will be hard to choose one.

  • Tiffani

    hey there !
I’ve been seeing these carriers for years and every time I see one , I’ve always thought what a brilliant idea. I Think the invention of this was great and makes it so much easier on parents to travel around with their kids. I Know when I travel with three bags I’m struggling so I cant imagine adding a child to that mix. Even though I’m not expecting, I know people who are and I think this would make a great gift. So thanks for sharing.

    • Karen

Hello, Tiffani…thank you for visiting and sharing your thoughts. A baby carrier would make a terrific baby shower gift for a new mom and dad. The newborn is a heart beat away and the parent has both hands to do their own thing. Can’t get any better than that 🙂
